what to choose
Hey guys!
I was wondering what to choose? Mesmer/Ele or Ele/mesmer (looking for the most fun + best damage play style!) Thanks in advance! |

Mesmer/Ele - Mesmers have armor ignoring damage and can be very disruptive. Eles damage isn't armor ignoring, which handicaps them in Hard Mode.
And yes, IMHO, Mesmers are more fun to play. |

Can't disagree with above posters. Mesmer have armor ignoring damage and pair it with huge disrupting ability and utility(you'll love it in HM if you're planning to get that far), and Fast casting is simply awesome.
Do not feel like you can't roll a ele though. Is very good if you're very new to the game, and can easily handle the nm content. In HM you'll have problems, but we all had to deal with it. It's a shame that the best thing a ele can do is AP builds or ER prot/bonds, plus Invoke and other supbar/niche stuff. |

I would choose Mesmer over Elementalist if your wanting damage and playstyle.
The reason being that even though Elementalists have Energy Storage, Mesmers can play the role of any caster class and has a HUGE variety of energy gaining skills as well as defensive stances. Mesmers are also used in PvP quite often but it's more for shutdown capability than anything. In the Illusion line Mesmers have an elite called "Signet of Illusions" which helps any skills to be based on the attribute of Illusion Magic so you can use any skill outside of Mesmer attribute and have a 16 instead of a 12. Not only that, but Fast Casting is an amazing attribute, it speeds up recharge of your Mesmer skills in PvE and speeds up skill casting as well. That would be my opinion of why I would personally choose Mesmer over Elementalist, but we all have our reasons, I hope your happy with whatever decision you decide to make. |

But the choice isn't mesmer or Ele its both, but which primary.
Mesmer/Ele will let you put points fast casting and reduce the casting time of your mesmer skills so if your into pvp or are likely to be doing loads of Interruptions then Mesmer/Ele is the way to go. Ele/Mesmer will give you Energy Storage so you are able to have a very large store of energy, so if your energy management isn't that good or you are using a lot of high energy skills then perhaps Ele/Mesmer is better for you. Either is a great choice |

Eles play significantly different from mesmers and vic-versa. You shouldn't be playing an Mes as an ele, even if ele is his secondary.
Also, another point I always like to make when posts like this come up is that your secondary profession should complement your character, not replace it. If you are a Me/E, you should have maybe 1-2 ele skills on your bar tops. Often, you can do fine with none. Also, later in the game you can change your secondary profession around as many times as you want. So don't feel like you will be "stuck" with E/Me or Me/E (you can just as easily become a Me/A or Me/N). The primary is the main thing that matters and the only choice of your character that is really permanent. |

I remember the days when the answer to this question was the other way around:
Ele if you want to deal damage, Mesmer only if you are going to PvP - back in the early days. ruk1a has made the best suggestion so far, imho: play the game, try each profession. In the end, it's all about what you want to do and how you want to play. It's a game. Have fun. Try stuff. Laugh when it fails and try something new the next time you attempt whatever it is that you were doing. I played my main solely as a Warrior/Necromancer for the first year or so of my time in GW. It drove some of my Alliance members absolutely nuts. Did I have fun? Hell yes, I did. And I wouldn't trade it for all the Ecto, Armbraces, rare minis, or notariety that could have come my way had I not spent over a year playing less-than-optimal builds. Why? Because I had a blast, and those memories have stuck with me through 5+ years of exploring, farming, fighting, dying, and kicking ass in the name of Balthazar and Grenth. Every profession has the potential, depending upon your mindset, to provide an enjoyable experience playing. As others have said (in their own words), if you're looking only at efficiency, that's going to limit your choices somewhat.
